BOASTY - Boaters Of America Say Thank You - To The Men and Women of the United States Armed Forces

Last November 30th (2008) I was online in an online boating forum reading threads, checking out pictures, and putting my two cents in when I cam across a story about another members daughter which had been bestowed gifts of appreciation by the American public for her service to our country.  She had been given free coffee from starbucks as well as a first class seat upgrade from an airline on her way back to her dutystation from Orlando Florida.

I thought, WOW what a great thing to do!  Later that afternoon I was to be at my mother and fathers house for their 40th wedding anniversary party to see family and friends.  While at the party I thought up an idea to put together an outing the next summer on my boat to take out other veterans like myself, as well as more importantly active duty soldiers.  I was a truck driver or 88M to those who know what that is while I was in the ARMY from 1989-1991.  I served for close to 10 months in Iraq during the Desert Storm / Shield Conflict. 

In any case I wanted to find something I could do to honor these younger veterans and soldiers.  My days usually consist of sitting behind a computer screen and spending weekends on my boat with my family.  It then hit me, like the airline, why couldn't I extend an offer to take some troops out on MY boat for a day?!?  It sounded like a great idea.  Doing something that meant being out on my boat anyway?  And to share my love of boating with others!  It was perfect! 

Later that evening I came home from the party at my parents house and jumped onto the website where I originally read the story and posted the idea.  There seemed to be a rather large flurry of excitement and interest from the other boaters from phone calls and responses to the idea.  From that idea one of the other boaters wanted to give it a name.  He said how about "BLOT" or Boaters Love Our Troops.  But Blot.org and other names were already taken.  Later that week while sitting on the couch with my daughter it came to me...  BOASTY - Boaters Of America Say Thank You!  I was able to get the .org name and a couple of other variations.

BOASTY is all about doing something special for the men and women of the United States Armed Forces.  My idea was to take some younger veterans coming home out for a full day on my boat.  As a veteran myself if someone had offered to do that for me, well, I couldn't have thought of a better way for people stateside to have said thank you to me.  I love the water, have a boat, and this was what I thought up.  So, do you have a boat?  Sign up and get connected with some vets that would love to go out with you, get to know them, show them a great time, and share your love of the water.  Or, take my lead and do something else for these great men and women!
