Rules on the water? What a novel idea. Those only apply to the big guys right. Not folks who love fishing or just a sweet sunset on the lake. Well they apply to everyone. The Maximum fine for violations of the rules is $5000. You probaly wont get a fine unless you have an accident. So why am I on My band wagon? Just read an article in Coast Guard Proceddings. Told of an accident on the OHIO river in 06.
Bottom line 6 Men out fishing got run over by a tug/ barge pushing ahead in the fog. Fishermen had no lights on their boat. It was overloaded, Passengers had no life jackets on, No fog signals were being sounded by the fishing boat. and they were crossing the river where they were not to impede the passage of vessals going up or down the river.
I don't know if the families of those dead fishermen had other life insurance pollicies but you would hope that they did. The Tug and tow was found to be not at fault. Please if you go out early and are in the fog sound the correct fog signals. Have your navigation lights working and be safe. Life Jackets can save your life. |

I hear that Captain Ellen, While it is unfortunate that those fishermen lost their lives, if they only knew the rules of the road/water, they might be alive today. |
