2010 Chicago Boat Show - Is it all over?

Every year for the past 10 or so I make it a habit to go to the Chicago Boat Show at McCormick Place.  Every year it's what I look forward to most as a sign that the next boating season is about to begin.  I go look at the boats in the same size as what I have and look for features I want, need, or can't live without in my next boat.  I also check out the larger cruisers which I thought I'd never be able to own.  In 1998 I saw my present boat, the 1998 Avanti 4085 which as far as I'm concerned was one of the two best in show that year.  The other boat I really liked was a Four Winns Excalibur I think.  Also in the 40 foot range.  Well, I've come to find out that these days might possibly be over!  It's possible that this years show may not have much to look at for comparison shoppers.

I've been talking with Terry Anderson of Chicago Sea Ray and have found out that The Skipper Buds Yacht Brokerage and Sea Ray Dealerships are pulling out of the Chicago show.  That had been decided as early as June or July when they began talking with the officials at the Convention center about concessions which needed to be made in order for the show to be worth while to attend in 2010.  After a very brief conversation they weren't able to get anywhere with the convention center to work out a better price.  Since then, the show left their name on the exibitors list (I'm guessing as a ploy to get more exibitors to sign up) and until recently refused to take them off the list.

They've also told me that in conversation with other dealer chains, that they too are pulling out.  So I have to ask, with all these dealers pulling out, who's really going to be left at the show?  Most people I know want to see the big boats that they'll never afford and then the few which actually go for the big boat show deals so that they can buy...  Well the boat show deals (at the show) may be a thing of the past.  The dealers are still getting their huge incentives from the manufacturers and some of them will be passing on those savings right at their dealerships instead of doing it at the show.

Figure this, a booth large enough to hold several boats both large and small may run $200,000 for a 4 day show.  They only make that back if they sell ALOT of boats.  If they sell them at the dealerships which they already cover in their existing costs, that means more savings for you!

So if you're a Sea Ray Fan, and only buy a Sea Ray, all you need to do is go to your local dealership this January and you can get all the deals you want!  Plus, I'm sure that the boat show specials will be posted to HotBoatDeals.com so you can keep checking here as well.  But to hammer out the final price for your next boat, just hop on down to the dealership of your choice.

I actually got a chance to be in the show and share the booth with Great Lakes Scuttlebutt Magazine. The show turned out to be very good for the smaller vendors I think. The turnout was down from previous years but because the show organizers had the vendors out in front of the back wall of the main hall, we got to see many more people than in previous years at the show. Many people in recent years just don't go to see the vendors. But since we were mixed in with the boats in the main hall, it was great! I met a ton of great people at the show this year.
